Banksy has returned to the Big Apple in a New York State of Mind with his latest ‘Rat Race’ art piece that has the city abuzz.

The famous anonymous street artist erected the work on the exterior of an old bank building—located along the high traffic area of 14th Street and Sixth Avenue—that’s slated for demolition.

When asked if this was a part of a new series by Banksy, representatives of the artist told PIX11’s news reporter Greg Mocker to “stand by.”

Back in 2013, Banksy had invested a month putting up art projects around New York City.

This recent installation has New Yorkers wondering if a new project is in the works, and what the rat graphic symbolizes.

Some speculate that it’s emblematic of the five boroughs’ impending extinction, considering the city’s mounting long-term and short-term struggles ranging from subway operations to the impact of climate change on its urban landscape.

Others view it as the more obvious reference to the daily hustle-and-bustle of the average New Yorker, where each is trapped in the ruthless competition for wealth and power.

Either way, Banksy certainly has The City That Never Sleeps on “stand by” and in anticipation of what’s to come.
